Very odd. Felt I should document that!Rachel Fentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10046917627054462214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-91522903263328104572010-03-22T17:47:07.964+00:002010-03-22T17:47:07.964+00:00All the pictures were as I found them on the Inter...All the pictures were as I found them on the Internet, Kass. No manipulation whatsoever. And you’re right, ‘didactic’ is a great word.

Jim Murdochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786388638146471193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-34001359776455026402010-03-22T14:36:03.440+00:002010-03-22T14:36:03.440+00:00This is a great review. Love that word.

I love the fairy tale and Biblical implications in this novel. Even if they weren't so blatant, we would read them into this story - any story. Humans have a need to figure out their psyches in all the arts. Speaking of art, those pictures in this post were stunning. Their color and clarity had an eerie beauty. Did you do something different in posting them? Were they from the internet or an actual book.Kasshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05233330248952156754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-28720180308577685382010-03-22T13:03:23.260+00:002010-03-22T13:03:23.260+00:00No, I understand exactly, Dave. When the book arri...No, I understand exactly, Dave. When the book arrived I wasn't at all keen but I've been deliberately trying to broaden my reading and this is as good a way as any to do that. The bottom line is that you won't know until you've read it whether or not it's for you. I'm finding reading older books a bit like listening to older music. When I was young I couldn't wait to get onto 20th century composers but now I'm starting to see Classical and Romantic composers in a different light.

People who have been brought up on contemporary horror novels will find this tame. And it is. But I can see why it's his most popular work.

Jim Murdochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786388638146471193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-81075042657264981942010-03-22T12:20:45.753+00:002010-03-22T12:20:45.753+00:00I don't know what to think about that one, Jim...I don't know what to think about that one, Jim. By and large I'm not into Gothic novels. It's obviously another great review since I read it through to the end and am still wondering about the book. Part of me is saying "this one's different" and another part "you'll not like it, you know you won't". It's a bit like being presented with a dish you're not sure about at your favourite restaurant. You'll not know until you try it.Dave Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08430484174826768488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-47138820979517040382010-03-22T11:52:23.446+00:002010-03-22T11:52:23.446+00:00One of the highlights of my life, Rachel, was watc...One of the highlights of my life, Rachel, was watching the film Arachnephobia with a grown man sitting on my living room couch peeking over his knees which had been drawn up to his face and squealing like a wee pig every time a spider appeared onscreen. Sean was terrified of spiders. Once in the store we used to work in I watched him bolt out of the back shop “chased” by a ball of fluff he’d mistaken for a spider. There is no way he could read this book. It’s not graphic. It’s suggestive and that’s all it needs to be. You do the rest. Glad the review piqued your interest.

Jim Murdochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786388638146471193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-66814896669732135112010-03-22T08:27:16.468+00:002010-03-22T08:27:16.468+00:00I'm adding it to my list, Jim. Great review - ...I'm adding it to my list, Jim. Great review - disgusting pictures of spiders! Blurgh! I've read a fair few Gothic novels from the 1700s onwards so this will do nicely. And I discovered a great little bookshop last week which has some off the beaten track stuff so I may well find a copy there. Failing that, tinternet'll be grand.

Fab review. Love the datail re author's name origin, and the spider facts. I actually want to get hold of the spider phobia book now, too.

Thanks.Rachel Fentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10046917627054462214noreply@blogger.com
