I guess the context is what decides. A man can be found guilty of a crime but feel no shame but then, and I think this is where the distinction lies, someone can feel ashamed of a situation where they did nothing wrong oftentimes where they are actually the victim. Perhaps the core difference between the two expressions is that guilt says I've done something wrong; shame says I am wrong. I don't think either expression is adequate for what I feel. In my current work-in-progress the woman talks about suffering from guilst which she says is like angst, a form of guilt for which there is no cause, it's just there constantly.

As for whether guilst is a part of my "symphony", Elisabeth, I really couldn't say. It's such a part of me that I don't think about it any more but I'm unsure how much any of this comes through in my writings. For example, I don't think Jonathan feels especially guilty for anything in his life (and he really has very little to feel guilty about) but he is embarrassed by much of it; appearances are important to him. I'm the same, easily embarrassed and self-conscious.

As for the comment made to you about blogging . . . people like that should be shot. The number of times I have seen something pure, good, decent and honest permanently soiled by a thoughtless, tactless, insensitive and shallow comment like that is simply not true: "Oh, so you don't actually get paid when your poems are published." Just go to any site where self-publishers are talking and you'll see that much of the talk is about them trying to justify themselves and to assuage their guilt/shame/guilst.

Reading between the lines in Postgate's autobiography there is an undercurrent there, of regret rather than a feeling of guilt or embarrassment but I doubt there are many old men whose lives are not tinged by that. I regret much. I regret leaving things so late. And maybe a lot of the time I mistake regret for guilt or one of the others; they all blur into the one great heartache eventually.

Jim Murdochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786388638146471193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-91680891234174688712009-12-03T21:33:10.187+00:002009-12-03T21:33:10.187+00:00Guilt is allegedly a very 'Catholic' thing...Guilt is allegedly a very 'Catholic' thing, Jim and Kass, with which I'm most familiar.

I'd like to know more about what Kass means about 'guilt' as part of your symphony, Jim. Kass or Jim can you oblige?

I've been exploring the connections between guilt and shame. They're closely related - abstract concepts perhaps-but very painful and to my mind they are also part of what drives the desire to write.

Think about these feelings as expressed through Oliver Postgate's work. I'm sure there are elements of these emotions alive here.

Ahh the shamelessness of being able to create such wonderful low budget films in face of the vast commercial monolith that presumably would be so uppity about Postgate's efforts.

Someone criticised me recently for blogging. In this person's mind blogging is an inferior activity. It demonstrates I'm just a 'housewife' who wants to write.

Of course this idea rankles, touches a raw nerve, is on a tangent too, but seems to me to be linked with so many ideas that emanate from this particular post on the nature of one man's creative endeavour and its links to imagination and childhood, where from (at least to me mind) all the best creativity emerges.

Sorry for that last long sentence and for cutting across your post, Jim, to talk to Kass. I trust you don't mind such cross conversations among your audience of commentersElisabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04015624747225433940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-75974499525412440292009-12-03T16:07:49.070+00:002009-12-03T16:07:49.070+00:00Maybe that's the problem, Rachel, I could neve...Maybe that's the problem, Rachel, I could never see myself as 'Emily'.

And, Kass, another vote for Bagpuss, eh? Is it Elisabeth? I think the impulse is behind a lot of artistic offerings. We're saying, "look, Mom and Dad, you cast your spell, but it didn't take. I can do this. Look at me. Look at me, Mom and Dad."

(quoting Elisabeth's profile) - "I’m keen to explore ideas about what drives the impulse to write, unconscious connections and the like. I’m interested in the text behind the text, embedded in the text and in readable theory in the area of so-called ‘life writing’ with its weave of fact and fiction." - ME TOO.

I would never have guessed that guilt was a major theme in your symphony.Kasshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05233330248952156754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-55137908946384858002009-12-02T23:13:30.841+00:002009-12-02T23:13:30.841+00:00I went and dug out my Bagpuss cuddly toy and I can...I went and dug out my Bagpuss cuddly toy and I can say it isn't the cat that does it for me...it was more the sweet nonsense and the mice fixing things, and the nails you could see holding the woodpecker's feet...the home-madeness of it! If there's two things that I've noticed people love to talk about it's firstly, the chocolate bars and sweets they don't make any more and secondly, the TV programmes we used to watch as kids and how what's on TV now simply can't hold a candle to them.

Some artists work on a grand scale and they're the ones we tend to sit up and take notice of but then there are other who produce chamber pieces and people don't usually make such a fuss about them which is a shame.

If you're looking for a Xmas present for some small children then see which of his stuff is available on DVD in your region. We've sent a few things to my wife's grandchildren in America over the years that they would never have seen otherwise.

Jim Murdochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786388638146471193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-19391966989881717412009-12-02T11:42:32.278+00:002009-12-02T11:42:32.278+00:00I've never heard of any of these creatures, Ji...I've never heard of any of these creatures, Jim, these imaginative rumblings from such a creative master, but I enjoyed them all, especially the PingWings.

Thanks for introducing themElisabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04015624747225433940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-89237608853790850162009-12-02T11:29:10.570+00:002009-12-02T11:29:10.570+00:00You know, Steerforth, it would be interesting some...You know, Steerforth, it would be interesting some day to make a list of all the actors who have played God. None of us had any problem with either The Clangers or Bill and Ben. They revamped Bill and Ben recently and I happened to catch an episode – it was awful, almost as bad as the big screen Magic Roundabout (although I do agree that Joanna Lumley was born to play 'Ermintrude'). One can only imagine and shudder at the thought of what damage could be done to Postgate's work in the decades to come.

Jim Murdochhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786388638146471193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327348657265652781.post-84902420929320069302009-11-30T14:31:18.231+00:002009-11-30T14:31:18.231+00:00I found that a delightful read.
